How do you know what background to use when you’re recording videos for your video marketing?

Hi. I’m Mark Bullock. I’m the co-founder of Videosocials.net and phoneBlogger.net . And I’m going to give you examples rather than answering the question directly.

So, we have a member. His name is Steven Conyers. He does cybersecurity. He tried a couple of different backgrounds and then he tried a virtual black background, which initially — and some people were like, … I’m not so sure about that, you know, having nothing behind you really puts you as the centerpiece — but he’s in cyber security and it works. It works very well and that is the feedback that he gets both inside Videosocials and out.

Another happens to be a cybersecurity guy, tried eight or nine different backgrounds, recorded from different places, etc. and then he, by accident, stumbled onto a background where he had some like glowing light that was behind him and the rest is kind of black and it was very kind of surreal looking and that was it. And everyone thinks that that is the best possible background that he could use.

Another one, Allison Williams. She’s a purse aficionado , and so she has her purse sitting next to her — one of her many purses — sitting next to her for each one. Again, initial responses were, I think you forgot to put your purse away. And she was like, no, that’s… it was a deliberate, it’s part of her brand, right?

So, these are just examples of people that are using things that don’t necessarily fit the mold. And I’m not suggesting that you necessarily do a black background or that you have a purse sitting next to you unless it’s part of your brand, unless it’s part of your personality. Others have kind of constructed a background. They’ll have a globe, or they’ll have certificates, or they’ll have personal mementos, etc . — always neat and tidy, though.

The point is the background that you use should look good on camera and it should reflect who you are. And that way it’s authentic. It’s not the law library because you’re an attorney. Well, everybody else does that, right, so there’s no way — that doesn’t differentiate you at all.

So, make your background a part of you and one of the safest ways to do it is to think in terms of what are your clients going to see when they come to meet with you? That’s always a safe place to start.

I hope you found that valuable. If you did, there’s lots more points and tips like it at Videosocials.net/Academy . Again, I’m Mark Bullock, the co-founder of Videosocials.net. Have a great day.
